Other applications are evacuation systems in large offices or tracking the movements of visitors in sensitive areas of a building. The Beacon is easy to fix and remove on any type of clothes and light enough to be forgotten after a few minutes. Still, it includes all the necessary electronics to be used as a beacon in our indoor positioning system. Related products IPS Receiver --- ### Beacon F URL: https://www.metratec.com/products/rtls/indoor-positioning/beacon-f/ Sometimes you need a little bit of visual help to find an asset – especially in full production facilities. At the same time, you do not want to fix the beacon permanently on the object but only track it for some time. In those cases, our Beacon F is the right solution. While the product looks like a regular signal light it is a full tracking beacon including a wireless link to activate the LED. That way you can not only see the position of the beacon in your software but also activate the light remotely to help find a specific object. Thanks to the integrated magnetic foot the beacon can be easily fixed and removed from unfinished products without a trace. Related products IPS Receiver --- ### Beacon L URL: https://www.metratec.com/products/rtls/indoor-positioning/beacon-l/ The IPS Beacon L is an active transponder, which was developed for the localization of objects. With IP65 protection class, the sender can be screwed to any asset and transmits its ID at a configurable time interval. This signal is detected by an IPS receiver and forwarded to the RTLS middleware IoT-Engine. The range can be configured up to 100 m (with a good mounting position of the receiver). Thanks to the use of state-of-the-art radio chips in combination with our power-optimized firmware, a beacon can be operated for between 5 and 8 years with one charge of batteries, depending on the settings. So after the first installation only a minimum of maintenance is necessary. Using IEEE 802.15.4 and not Bluetooth LE as the foundation has the advantage that you can select a single radio channel where the beacons are sending and thus avoid any problems with your existing WiFi or other wireless infrastructure. Specifications Operating Principle IEEE 802.15.4 Indoor Positioning Beacon Operating Frequency 2.45 GHz ISM band Output Power max. 4 dBm Channels 11 – 26 supported (configurable) Read Range up to 100 m (configurable) Operating Voltage 3x AAA Battery (5+ years battery life) Ingress Protection IP65 Dimensions 90 x 60 x 45 mm Certifications CE (eg. In some scenarios, this design offers great advantages over a “normal” HF reader: Tags in any orientation are read reliably when passing through the tunnel and even larger quantities of tags can be scanned in one pass. This is especially interesting if many objects with RFID transponders are to be read at once, but they are not arranged exactly. Typical examples are consignments of goods in shipping boxes (incoming inspection), control of picking processes (outgoing goods inspection) as well as the monitoring of products or materials within production (in-house logistics). Reading technology (metraTec QuasarLR) with very high detection speeds and excellent reception sensitivity is used in tunnels. This allows the detection of a large number of transponders even at comparatively high belt speeds. The Metratec HF Tunnel has a standard internal width and height of 500 mm and is equipped with a standard plastic roller conveyor. Other dimensions up to complete installations for production belts including substructure in profile construction can be realized on request. --- ### hfMux-16 RFID HF Multiplexer URL: https://www.metratec.com/products/rfid/rfid-multiplexers/hfmux-16-rfid-hf-multiplexer/ The hfMux-16 is our 16-port RFID multiplexer for HF systems with an operating frequency of 13.56 MHz and a maximum power of 4 W. Besides internal functionality, it provides the web-based Dashboard, which all other components use to display their information. It can be used from any modern browser, including tablet and mobile phone based browsers. It includes user management (username/password) with different user groups and flexible access rights. Some users might only be allowed to search for objects, other users might change data, and others can edit the entire system configuration. The customer can configure these rights and add/delete users as needed through the web interface. All configuration changes incl. adding and deleting rights of users are logged to a secure log file (audit log) that allows a full roll-back of any change if necessary. This core plugin also manages system updates with a graphical updates system that allows each plugin to be updated separately with a simple drag and drop in the browser. In case of problems, old versions can be restored as well directly inside the web dashboard. All actions, events, and hardware and software problems are automatically logged by the core plugin and can be reviewed via the browser (no need to log in to a server console) and sent to the metraTec support with a single button for quick and easy support. The core framework provides all general functions of the IoT-Engine and is a prerequisite for all further plugins. --- ### IPS Plugin URL: https://www.metratec.com/products/rtls/indoor-positioning/ips-plugin/ This plugin manages the infrastructure and data flow for a Metratec indoor positioning system (IPS). It is used to configure the receivers and beacons and checks the status of the hardware. With this plugin, a user is able to define zones (smallest unit of localization). All information about the receivers and beacons (e.g. battery state) is logged and displayed in the form of a table in the dashboard. It also displays which beacons are currently in which zone (zone location). All tables (receiver list, beacon list, etc.) are searchable and can be exported in MS Excel or other external tools. An application example is the location of a container in a certain area within a warehouse, e.g. within the outgoing goods department. --- ### IPS Receiver URL: https://www.metratec.com/products/rtls/indoor-positioning/ips-receiver/ The metraTec Indoor Positioning System (IPS) allows you to create a flexible localization infrastructure to track objects and persons inside buildings where cost and complexity can be adjusted to your needs. If you chose to install a stationary localization system the IPS Receivers will be the central component of your real-time localization system (RTLS). The device is mounted at all relevant places in your building where your mobile objects or persons should be localized. The boxes scan the area for signals from our IPS Beacons and send this information to the central software via standard Ethernet. This data includes the ID of the beacon as well as the signal strength (RSSI) to give you an idea of how far the beacon is away from the receiver station. Since the communication protocol used is completely open the server software can be our IoT Engine Software Suite but also your own software/middleware. Examples are the restocking of assembly line stock in a just-in-time production facility or cases in which suppliers automatically restock components on a daily basis. In all of these cases, plastic or paper cards are taken from load devices and inserted into mailboxes or collection boards. The only disadvantage of such systems is that they are currently not well connected to the digital infrastructure of the company such as the warehouse management systems. This is where the RFID Kanban Box can help. This box – which is made from solid bamboo and whose size can be adjusted to the size of your Kanban cards – contains a complete RFID system. It is simply connected to a power supply and Ethernet network. Using appropriate software the employees responsible for restocking can now see from any location and at any time where there is a need for restocking and what is needed. Assuming the system is configured correctly even outside suppliers can see through the internet what needs restocking (e.g. in case of restocking is done by the suppliers directly). Besides using a small and simple dedicated Kanban software a direct link to existing Kanban software systems is also possible. If needed, the Kanban Box can even be connected to your ERP system using software supplied by one of our partners. --- ### RFID Plugin URL: https://www.metratec.com/products/rfid/rfid-plugin/ This plugin manages and monitors all devices which are necessary for a typical application with passive RFID. The plugin is used to configure the readers and read points and checks the status of the hardware (e.g. running). Both, HF and UHF readers from metraTec as well as other manufacturers are supported by the plugin. All information about the reader and read points is logged and displayed in the form of a table within the dashboard. It also displays which tags are currently present at a read point. All tables are searchable and can be exported in MS Excel or other external tools. An example of the application is the permanent inventory of a warehouse, which is monitored and controlled with the help of the IoT Engine. The plugin can also be used to control complete UHF tunnels or gates with multiple antennas in one spot including filtering, de-doubling, and writing transponder data. --- ### RFID Starter Kit HF Maxi URL: https://www.metratec.com/products/rfid/starter-kits/rfid-starter-kit-hf-maxi/ Do you want to get to know the HF RFID technology at 13.56 MHz and want to start as soon as possible? One special feature of our gate is the use of metal side panels which limit the RF field and reflects the power to the inside of the gate. This ensures optimal field distribution and as a consequence optimal reading results even in “difficult” applications that include metal or liquids. To prevent leakage of the field (and consequent “false reads”) there is an option to even include absorber zones at the side of the gate. The product is made to your specifications and can take the form of a people gate on the one side, where potential applications are event monitoring and ticket control (using cheap UHF tickets) and even applications in logistics where goods are transported manually. Besides a human-sized gate, we also offer individually designed UHF gates in other dimensions. We have realized projects to read out pallet trucks, forklifts, or even entire trucks. Usually, we try to keep the gate as small as possible for the application to get the highest transponder read rates. Related products PulsarLR UHF RFID Reader – Long Range Industrial Reader/Writer Echo-6P UHF RFID Antenna --- ### UHF RFID Tunnel URL: https://www.metratec.com/products/rfid/rfid-systems/uhf-rfid-tunnel/ One of the most promising applications of RFID technology is the optimization of supply chains in logistics. Goods equipped with UHF transponders can be recorded automatically so that the correct stock is always stored in the company database. To use this potential, secure and complete registration of all transponders is necessary. For this purpose, metraTec offers the UHF RFID tunnel in two versions. The smaller version has an inner dimension of 55 x 55 cm, for the detection of parcels in the standard 60 x 40 x 40 cm size. The bigger has 75 x 75 cm inner dimensions, which also allows scanning half Euro pallets with 80 x 60 x 60 cm. In addition to the complete RFID technology, the products are also equipped with two light barriers as standard and have an integrated manual roller conveyor. A motor-driven conveyor belt can also be integrated as an option. The special construction method, which was developed and patented in cooperation with the Fraunhofer IFF, achieves an optimal distribution of the reading field inside. This enables extremely high reading rates of UHF transponders even in RFID applications with “difficult” environmental conditions (metal in the field, transponders very close together, etc.). Even large numbers of transponders (400 and more) can be read in parallel in a few seconds in the tunnel. The reading field is strongly concentrated inside the tunnel. This leads to very high detection reliability in the tunnel, but at the same time prevents unwanted detection of transponders in adjacent installations. Optionally, the UHF tunnel can be equipped with RF absorber sections at input and/or output. These completely prevent the reading of transponders outside the tunnel and, in conjunction with the photoelectric switches, enable the precise allocation of UHF transponders. --- ### UM14 HF Embedded Mifare Module URL: https://www.metratec.com/products/rfid/oem-modules/um14/ You are looking for a complete RFID module using MIFARE® technology with an internal antenna to integrate into your own device? The functionality is similar to that of the well-known Global Positioning System (GPS), with the difference that GPS can only be used if there is an undisturbed connection to a satellite. RTLS, on the other hand, can also be used in closed rooms, such as an industrial hall or warehouse, and offers further advantages in terms of cost, accuracy, and flexibility. Metratec offers three different types of real-time tracking systems – each with its advantages and disadvantages. Click on the technology logos below to learn more about each one. Localize / RTLS Presence Detection (IPS) Detection of objects and people in zones for cost-optimized localization Ultrawideband (UWB) Very accurate positioning to +-20cm for the highest demands Angle of Arrival (AoA) Combination of location accuracy and system costs with angle measurement Applications Personnel Safety Rental Equipment Container Tracking Tracking of Hospital Assets Evacuation Systems Guest Tracking Safety and process optimization with RTLSIf tracking people brings “surveillance” to many people’s minds, there are nevertheless several application scenarios in which real-time tracking of people can be very useful. For example, RTLS can help save lives when evacuating buildings. RTLS can also contribute to occupational safety in high-security areas such as laboratories or an airport, detecting emergencies in good time and providing rapid assistance. In the field of logistics, RTLS serves to optimize and automate production or warehousing. Interoperability and ScalabilityMetratec offers proprietary systems that work with open standards as far as possible to ensure interoperability. The communication between beacons and receivers works according to the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, which also allows coexistence with WLAN and Bluetooth. RTLS solutions from Metratec are easy to scale, as all components can be combined for different ranges and location accuracies. This allows for the development of custom-fit installations that can be extended into outdoor environments where pure ultrawideband (UWB) solutions are not legally permitted. Our systems are designed so that only parts of a building or hall need to be equipped with receivers, without having to compromise on coverage or the desired usage scenario. This can reduce infrastructure costs and minimize problems in protecting employees’ data. --- ### RF Identification (RFID) URL: https://www.metratec.com/technologies/rfid/ What is RFID technology? Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a wireless technology that uses radio waves to identify objects without a direct line of sight and store small amounts of data on RFID transponders or RFID tags. RFID is a versatile technology with a wide range of applications. It is commonly used in logistics, supply chain management, and retail. RFID tags can also be used to identify assets, animals, and people. Thanks to the low cost and small size, RFID can be employed in many industries and is one of the building blocks of the Internet of Things. How is an RFID system built? Three main parts make up an RFID system: RFID transponders (commonly also known as RFID tags or smart labels), RFID readers/writers, and RFID software or RFID middleware. A small antenna and a microprocessor make up the electronic components of an RFID tag (transponder). Single items, pallets, shipping units, etc. can all have tags attached to them. RFID tags can be scanned without direct line of sight and they are more durable than barcodes and can withstand harsh environments which is especially important in industrial applications. The tags (transponders) are given energy by the readers. Every RFID transponder that is within the reader’s read range is automatically enabled and starts sending data to the device, such as its serial number or Electronic Product Code (EPC). Subsequently, the RFID middleware gathers all of this data, combines it, and handles the interaction with any ERP, warehouse management system, or other software backend. What different types of RFID are there? Technically there are three different types of RFID available: passive RFID, semi-passive RFID, and active RFID but in 90% of the cases, people mean the passive kind when talking about RFID. In passive RFID the transponder has no own power source but is powered via the field from the RFID reader. This has the advantage that the RFID transponder can be cheap, small, and will last a long time. These RFID tags are attached to objects or people that contain a unique identifier or electronic product code (EPC) that can be read by an RFID reader over a distance of typically 1 – 10 meters. The reader then sends this information to a linked computer, which can then be used to get more information about the object like a price or manufacturer name, or track the object’s last location.  In the 2000s people were also using semi-passive (or battery-assisted) RFID tags. These tags are made up of a passive tag configuration and a power source, often a thin battery or some kind of energy harvesting component. Since these semi-passive tags don’t have to receive their energy from the reader, the read range is greater than that of the passive tags. When compared to passive tags, they are more costly and have a shorter lifespan. However since modern passive RFID readers and transponders have become much more performant and energy efficient over the years, the read range of a passive RFID system is usually far enough for most applications. The importance of... --- ## Industries ### Automated Guided Vehicles URL: https://www.metratec.com/industries/automated-guided-vehicles/ RFID for Automated Guided Vehicles An AGV that loses its way blocks production. A robot that grabs the wrong pallet causes warehouse chaos. That’s why manufacturers of automated guided vehicles and mobile robots use RFID to complement camera and lidar. The Problem Autonomous vehicles typically navigate using laser scanners and cameras. This works well – until the environment changes. A new shelf, a parked forklift, changing light conditions: Suddenly the map is outdated and the vehicle is uncertain. Pure odometry – counting wheel rotations – drifts over time. After a hundred meters, that can mean several centimeters of deviation. Not enough for precise docking at a loading station. The Solution RFID tags in the floor provide absolute position references. The vehicle drives over a tag, reads its unique ID, and knows exactly where it is. No drift, no dependence on lighting conditions, no confusion with similar-looking locations. The tags are passive transponders – small plastic discs that are glued or embedded in the floor. They need no power, no maintenance, and last for years. Infrastructure costs are minimal compared to complex sensor setups. For load carrier recognition, RFID works the same way: The robot reads the tag on the pallet and immediately knows what it’s carrying and where it goes. No confusion, no wrong delivery. Why Manufacturers Want This Reliability is the main argument. An AGV that gets stuck once a week costs more than the saved labor costs. RFID floor markers give the vehicle certainty – even when the camera is briefly blinded or the laser scanner sees a reflection. The second reason is simplicity. Setting up new routes means: stick tags and register them in the software. The customer can do this themselves, without expensive commissioning by the manufacturer. Technical Implementation For floor navigation, we use HF technology. The range of a few centimeters is actually an advantage here: The vehicle reads only the tag directly beneath it, not the one three meters away. For load carrier recognition at greater distances, UHF is used. This lets the robot read the pallet tag from half a meter away as it approaches. The modules are designed for speed. At one meter per second travel speed, there’s little time for reading – our readers handle it. What We Deliver Different modules for different applications: QR15 or QuasarMX for HF floor applications, DwarfG2 or PLRM for UHF load carriers. Plus matching antennas that mount under the vehicle. The machine mills with incorrect parameters. The workpiece is scrap, worst case the tool is damaged. Such errors cost money and time – and they can be avoided with RFID. The Problem Industrial machines work with tools and consumables: milling heads, grinding wheels, filters, ink cartridges, welding wire. Each part has specific parameters, each part wears differently. The machine needs to know what’s currently installed. Traditionally, manufacturers solve this through magazine positions, barcodes, or manual entry. It works – as long as the operator pays attention. But people make mistakes, especially under time pressure. And none of these methods help against counterfeit spare parts. The Solution An RFID tag on the tool or consumable stores all relevant data. The machine reads automatically: What is it? What parameters apply? How long has it been used? After use, the machine writes the updated usage data back. For a CNC milling machine, this means: The tool is recognized, offsets are loaded automatically, tool life is tracked. For a 3D printer: The filament is identified, print temperature adjusts automatically, remaining quantity is updated. For spare parts, this works as counterfeit protection: The machine only accepts parts with an authenticated tag. Cheap copies that may not have the same quality are detected and rejected. Why Manufacturers Want This Quality is the first reason. Wrong parameters lead to scrap, worn tools to poor surfaces. When the machine always knows what’s installed and how long it’s been running, such errors become rare. Aftermarket is the second reason. For many machines, the manufacturer earns more from consumables than from the machine itself. If the machine only accepts original parts, it protects this business from cheap competition. Differentiation is the third reason. RFID tool recognition is a premium feature. It makes the machine easier to operate and justifies a higher price. The Technical Challenge Industrial machines mean metal environments, oil, chips, vibrations. Not the environment where RFID typically shines. But it works – with the right components and the right design. HF technology at 13.56 MHz works even in close proximity to metal, as long as the antenna is positioned correctly. The read range is short – a few centimeters – but that’s enough for tool holders and cartridges. What We Deliver Our compact modules like QR15, Dwarf15, or RR15 are built for exactly these environments: Industrial-grade, with extended temperature range, robust against EMC interference from drives and motors. We support antenna design – because the right antenna in the right place is crucial. And we guarantee long-term availability, because machines live longer than consumer electronics. In a clinical lab, that can distort diagnoses. In a pharmaceutical company, it can ruin an entire batch. That’s why laboratory equipment manufacturers are increasingly adopting RFID. The Problem Laboratory instruments depend on specific reagents and consumables. A plate reader needs matching assay kits, an analyzer needs the right buffers and calibrators. Every batch has different characteristics, every product has an expiration date. Currently, lab technicians type lot numbers manually or scan barcodes. It works – most of the time. But it costs time, causes errors, and barely keeps up with increasing documentation requirements. For FDA-regulated labs, the burden of proof becomes an administrative nightmare. The Solution RFID modules in the instrument recognize reagents automatically. As soon as a reagent container is inserted, the device reads all relevant data: product type, lot number, expiration date, specific calibration parameters. No entry, no scanning, no mix-ups. The device can also write back: How much reagent was consumed? When was the container opened? This enables true first-in-first-out and prevents forgotten opened reagents. RFID works for user authentication too: The technician holds their badge to the device, and the system automatically documents who performed which analysis. FDA 21 CFR Part 11 requires exactly that – electronic signatures without password entry. Why Manufacturers Want This Quality assurance is the main reason. Wrong reagents mean wrong results, and wrong results mean recalls, liability issues, reputation damage. RFID eliminates an entire class of errors. The second reason is economic: Reagents are the business model of many laboratory equipment manufacturers. The instrument is sold at slim margins, profit comes from consumables. If the device only accepts original reagents, it protects this business model. What We Deliver Our HF modules like the QR15 are built for exactly this application: compact enough for benchtop instruments, fast enough for everyday lab work, reliable enough for regulated environments. They read single tags or entire racks with multiple samples simultaneously. Integration is straightforward – standard interfaces, documented protocols, and an engineering team that helps with antenna design. Developing laboratory instruments and considering RFID? A measuring device that doesn’t know when it was last calibrated jeopardizes quality assurance. That’s why measurement equipment manufacturers integrate RFID into their products. The Problem Measuring instruments work with sensors, test equipment, and consumables. A pH meter needs the right electrode with current calibration values. A breathalyzer needs certified mouthpieces. A water meter must be uniquely identifiable. Currently, calibration data is documented on paper or maintained in databases. It works – as long as someone maintains the data and the assignments are correct. But papers get lost, databases aren’t updated, and the sensor from the neighboring device looks exactly the same. The Solution An RFID tag on the sensor stores its calibration data directly. The measuring device reads the tag, instantly knows the calibration curve, the date of last calibration, the serial number. No mix-ups, no outdated data. After recalibration, the device writes the new data to the tag. The sensor carries its complete history with it – regardless of which device it’s connected to. This works for consumables too: A breathalyzer recognizes the disposable mouthpiece and knows it’s unused. After the test, the tag is marked – reuse excluded. Why Manufacturers Want This Measurement accuracy is the main reason. Wrong calibration data means wrong measurements. When the sensor brings its own data, an entire error source is eliminated. Compliance is the second reason. ISO standards, GLP guidelines, industry-specific regulations – all require proof of calibration and traceability. With RFID, the system documents itself. For consumables, the economic aspect comes into play: Original parts are authenticated, counterfeits detected. This protects not just the business, but also measurement quality. Application Examples For water meters, RFID enables contactless reading in passing. The meter reader no longer needs to go into the basement – they read the meter from the street. For geotechnical sensors, the tag stores installation position and calibration history. Even after years in the ground, you still know which sensor it is and how it was calibrated. For laboratory instruments, RFID identifies the measurement electrode and automatically loads the matching parameters. Plug-and-play instead of searching through manuals. What We Deliver For handheld devices, we offer miniature modules like the Dwarf15 or RR15. For bigger stationary equipment, the QR15 or QRG2 with more range are optimal. The modules read and write, communicate via standard interfaces, and are designed for long-term availability. Contact: Developing measuring instruments or sensors? Talk to us about RFID integration. That’s why more and more medical device manufacturers are integrating RFID directly into their equipment. The Problem Medical devices rely on consumables: infusion bags, dialysis filters, breathing circuits, contrast media cartridges. Each use requires the right material – in the correct configuration, within its expiration date, from an authorized manufacturer. Traditionally, manufacturers solve this with barcodes or manual entry. Both are error-prone: barcodes get dirty or damaged, manual entry takes time and leads to typos. And neither helps much against counterfeit products. The Solution An RFID module in the device automatically recognizes consumables as soon as they’re inserted. No line of sight needed, no manual entry. The device instantly knows: What product is this? Is it genuine? Is it still valid? Does it match the current configuration? For dialysis machines, this means: The filter is recognized, its usage time is stored on the tag, and the device warns when replacement is due. For infusion pumps: The medication set is identified, and the pump automatically configures itself to the correct parameters. Why Manufacturers Want This The obvious reason is patient safety – and the regulatory requirements that come with it. FDA 21 CFR Part 11 demands complete documentation, EU MDR requires traceability. With RFID, the device meets these requirements automatically. The less obvious reason: aftermarket business. Consumables are often more profitable than the device itself. If the device only accepts original parts, it protects against cheap knockoffs and secures long-term revenue. What We Deliver We don’t build medical devices – we supply the RFID modules that device manufacturers integrate into their products. Compact form factors like the QR-NFC or RR15 fit even in portable equipment. The modules read and write tags, communicate via standard interfaces with the device controller, and are designed for long-term availability. Medical devices have lifecycles of 10-15 years. Anyone integrating an RFID module today needs to be sure they can still get replacements in ten years. We can help you with that. Developing a medical device with consumable recognition? As an SME and given our current way of operation luckily we have a fairly small environmental footprint. Thus, Metratec has so far not applied for or received certification according to ISO 14001 or similar environmental certification standards. Environmental Pollution Metratec develops, produces, and sells electronic products. Since the actual soldering processes are outsourced to EMS partners, the manufacturing is mainly limited to the setup and testing of PCBs and assembly into housings in some cases. Material flows associated with these operating conditions are inbound streams of components and soldered PCBs and outbound streams of products. There is a small outbound stream of discarded electronics due to manufacturing errors. This stream is collected and disposed of separately by a specialized disposal company. Electronics disposal is less than 1 ton/year.  Other streams going into the company are packaging materials (mainly cardboard and plastics). Some of this material is reused if still suitable. The rest is collected separately and disposed of with the local trash collection services. Of course we also use packaging materials for our outbound products. For these we are registered and comply with the German Packaging Act. There is also a small stream of residential type waste as our employees spend some of the working hours at the company and thus produce waste. Again, this is collected in five different categories (paper, organic, packaging, glass and refuse) and disposed of correctly by our (outsourced) cleaning service provider using the usual household trash collection facilities. Metratec emits a small amount of fluid waste in the form of waste water due to employees using the kitchen and restrooms. This wastewater goes into the normal sewage system. There are no regular gaseous emissions from the company. A main stream into the company is electricity as the building is being heated via a heat pump. This is considered a relatively low emissions way of heating. Electricity is also being used for the heating of water for sanitation and cooking purposes as well as operating lights, electrical devices, computers and the like.  Employees are instructed to save energy e.g. by shutting down any devices not in use. These policies and instructions are part of yearly trainings. Electrical lighting is through fluorescent or highly efficient LED lighting and is being transitioned to purely LED lighting as fluorescent tubes reach their life expectancy. Public spaces use motion sensors to activate lights. Office lights are expected to be turned off manually before leaving. This is checked on a regular basis and employees are reminded in case they forget. The building does not have air conditioning. Within the company, Frank Steyer, our head of operations, is responsible for questions regarding environmental impact. He is to be contacted directly with any issues regarding compliance with environmental laws or suggestions on lowering our environmental footprint. Employees are encouraged to commute to work via bicycle by supplying sufficient bicycle racks. The company is also easily reachable via public transportation. Power and water consumption are evaluated yearly by management with the intent of identifying savings potentials.
