metraTec develops HF Reader for IoT applications

February 9th 2021

The Magdeburg-based manufacturer of radio electronics is once again expanding its product range in the field of HF RFID and is presenting its new DMI15 HF RFID Reader. The DMI15 is characterized by a particularly simple installation. The reader only needs to be connected via Ethernet and is also supplied with power via the same cable. An external antenna is not necessary, as it is already built into the device.

Due to its compact dimensions of only 120 x 90 x 50 mm, the device can be installed directly in machines or on conveyor belts. The antenna integrated in the housing enables reading ranges of up to 80 mm. The reader was designed so that it can be integrated into the process without much effort.

"The DMI15 RFID Reader was developed specifically to meet the challenges of the Internet of Things," said Klaas Dannen, managing director of metraTec GmbH. "More and more customers want to avoid complex PLC programming when using RFID and are looking for devices that can be easily controlled from modern programming languages, such as Python and Java, or graphical interfaces, such as Node-Red. The new DMI15 supports all of this." For installation, the device only needs to be connected via Power of Ethernet (PoE). Communication to the host system is via Ethernet by default. Furthermore, NFC tags of NFC type 5 can be read and written with the DMI15. The DMI15 HF RFID Reader is controlled either directly via an ASCII protocol or via a number of free software libraries for Java, .NET or Python. In addition, the device is compatible with the in-house Middelware IoT engine, which can also configure, evaluate and monitor a larger number of devices in parallel.

The DMI15 HF RFID reader has two optically isolated 24V DC inputs and four 24V outputs. The special feature: For easier integration into machines, a 24V supply is available on two contacts on the IO Connector, which is generated from the PoE supply. Thus, light barriers, signal columns and the like can be directly controlled if required. The DMI15 HF RFID Reader is now available from metraTec. In addition to the reader, the scope of delivery includes a free DLL as well as comprehensive protocol documentation for integrating the device into own applications.
